War in Ukraine - UPDATE

war in ukraine - update Joe Biden discusses Russia's attack in White House conference

On Thursday, US president Joe Biden held a press briefing to address Russia's attacks in Ukraine. The president said Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, is fully responsible for the attack, and that Russia will face the consequences. The President claimed Putin wants to reestablish the former Soviet Union, and that right now he has no plans to talk with the Russian president.

After consulting the EU27 and G7, the president announced a series of strong sanctions and limitations on exports to Russia.  "This is going to impose severe cost on the Russian economy, both immediately and over time. We have purposefully designed these sanctions to maximize a long-term impact on Russia and to minimize the impact on the United States and our allies," president Biden argued. The list of sanctions targets Russia's ability to do business in dollars, euros and pounds, their ability to compete in the high-tech sector as well as specific Russian banks.

With respect to NATO defense, the White House leader expressed confidence that NATO members will observe Article 5 commitments, namely ensuring collective defense. The US president said he authorized "the deployment of ground and air forces stationed in Europe to the eastern flank" and will make additional US troops available for deployment to Germany as part of NATO's response.

"We're also taking steps to defend our NATO allies. Particularly in the east", Joe Biden said, adding that a NATO summit has been called for Friday. High on the agenda are the next steps the Allies will take in order to further strengthen cooperation at NATO level.
