Football. Romania lost 2-3 against Armenia on Wednesday
away in Group J of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Armenia scored first on minute
56, thanks to Eduard Spertsyan. Romania's Alexandru Cicâldău then scored on minutes
62 and 72, but the dynamic of the match changed on minute 78, when Romania's George
Puşcaş got the red card for a dangerous tackle against Andre Calisir. Armenia's
Varazdat Haroyan then equalised on minute 87 and two minutes later Armenia were
awarded a penalty kick after Alexandru Crețu tackled Spertsyan in the penalty
area. Tigran Barseghyan scored to secure Armenia a home win. Armenia thus have
9 points in their first three group matches and are currently ranked first. North
Macedonia are second, with 6 points, having defeated Germany away 2-1 on Wednesday.
Germany also have 6 points, but are in
third position in the group. With their 3 points won last week against North Macedonia,
Romania are now fourth in the group.
Romania's next official matches are due in September,
but before then will be playing two friendlies this summer, against Georgia and
England. In autumn, Romania will play Iceland away on 2nd September,
followed by Liechtenstein at home on 5th and then North Macedonia
away on 8th September. The winner of the group will qualify straight
to the 2022 World Cup, while the second-best placed sides will go into
play-offs. Romania last qualified for a World Cup in 1998 in France.
Tennis. The Romania-Salvador pair Horia Tecău and
Marcelo Arevalo lost the doubles quarterfinals at the Miami Open, an ATP Masters

sets, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9, but will receive 27,000 dollars for going this far and
180 ATP points in the doubles ranking. (CM)
