sports weekend The first match counting towards the final of the National League in men's handball was played on Thursday

Defending champions Dinamo Bucharest grabbed a 27-25 win against Steaua Bucharest, following the 7-meter throws. Regular time scoreboard displayed a 23-all draw in a match that was hosted by the town in Chiajna in the south, with Steaua being considered the host team. The return leg of the finals will be played in Bucharest on May 23rd, and will be hosted by Dinamo Sports Hall.

Now it's news from football. Romania's national squad has maintained its 23rd position according to the world rankings made public by the International Football Federation. Less than a month ahead of the start of the World Cup in Russia, top of the table is the German squad. Following in descending order are Brazil and Belgium. The national team of Chile is 9th-placed and on May 31st will take on the national squad of Romania in a friendly game, to be hosted by the Austrian city of Graz. The national side of Finland, is ranked 62nd. We recall Romania takes on Finland on June 5th, in a friendly confrontation.

In the last fixture counting towards the 10th-round of Romanian League One's Group 2 stage, Gaz Metan Medias secured a 1-nil home win against FC Voluntari on Thursday. The game's only goal was scored by Darius Olaru on 59 minutes.

Fixtures counting towards the 11th round of the Group 1 stage are to be played at the weekend. On Friday, Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe takes on Juventus Bucharest. On Saturday, Dinamo Bucharest takes on Concordia, in the southern Romanian town of Chiajna. On Sunday, FC Voluntari faces FC Botosani, on home turf, while on Monday, Poli Timisoara plays Gaz Metan Medias on home turf.

In Group 1 on Sunday, matches will be played counting towards the 10th round, which is also the last one, of the domestic championship. We recall the domestic championship's 10th round will also decide the champion.

Top of the table team CFR Cluj has one point more than the runner-up team FCSB. CFR takes on Viitorul Constanta on home turf, while the team from Bucharest plays Astra Giurgiu, in a game hosted by the National Arena in Bucharest.

A win for CFR Cluj may bring the 4th champion title for the Transylvanian team. Should Cluj sustain a defeat, and provided FCSB grabs a win against Astra Giurgiu, the team from Bucharest could win the title for the 27th time. In the third Group 1 fixture on Sunday, Poli Iasi takes on Universitatea Craiova on home turf.
