We start with football. Romania’s national football team are these days playing their last chances for qualification to the World Cup scheduled for next year. In the preliminary group E, the Romanian footballers will take on Armenia on Friday in Bucharest and Monday they will be pitted against Montenegro’s eleven in Podgorica.

 

News from tennis now. In Flushing Meadows continues the U.S. Open, the years’ last Grand Slam tennis tournament. Of the Romanian players left in the competition we can mention Monica Niculescu who is playing in the singles. She has qualified to the 3rd round after defeating another Romanian player, Ana Bogdan, in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Next, Monica Niculescu (57 WTA) will take on the American Jennifer Brady (91 WTA).

 

Now it’s time for judo. The World Judo Championships continue in Budapest at the weekend. Romania has signed up 14 athletes in the competition, 9 in the men’s competition and 5 in the women’s events. Unfortunately no Romanian athlete managed to win any medal in the first days of contest. The champions will come to an end on Sunday.

 

We end with news from basketball. Thursday saw the start of the European Men’s Basketball Championship, FIBA EuroBasket 2017. Matches have already been played in groups A and B, being hosted by Finland and Israel. The group C matches will take place in Romania in the center-western city of Cluj, while group D matches will be played in Turkey. The Polivalenta Hall in Cluj will host matches between the basketball teams of Romania, Spain, European en-titre champion, Montenegro, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Three matches per day will be played until September 7. On Wednesday, September 6, no matches will be played. The best 4 teams in the group will qualify to the eighth finals to be hosted by Turkey. The final of the FIBA EuroBasket 2017 will take place in Istanbul on September 17.
