Romania’s football champions Viitorul Constanta have blown their chances to qualify for the Europa League’s groups. The Romanians came a cropper, four-nil, to Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in the second round of the play-offs. The Austrians had also claimed the first match in Romania, three-one. Under these circumstances Romania has only one side, FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, which after being trounced by Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, will be playing in Europa League.

This weekend will be seeing the 8th leg of the first Romanian football league. Two games are taking place on Friday when Astra Giurgiu plays Juventus Bucharest and CSU Craiova takes on Gaz Metan Medias. On Saturday, Poli Timisoara will be meeting on home turf CFR Cluj, while in Pitesti, southern Romania, FC Voluntari takes on Dinamo Bucharest. On Sunday in Chiajna, close to Bucharest, local side Concordia plays Viitorul Constanta while in Bucharest, on the National Arena, FCSB is up against FC Botosani. Monday will see the leg’s last game pitching Poli Iasi against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe. CFR Cluj tops the table with 19 points, followed by FC Botosani with 16.

With three gold, one silver and three bronze medals Romania ranks 13th in the standings of the University Games underway in Taipei, Taiwan. Gymnast Larisa Iordache has reaped two gold medals for Romania, in the individual all round and the floor event. Another gold medal was brought by athlete Alina Rotaru in the long jump contest, while Alexandru Soare stepped onto the second step of the podium in the 10 thousand meter race. The bronze medals went to Larisa Iordache in the beam event, Andrei Muntean in the vault and Andrei Gag in the shot-put event. South Korea tops the table with 23 gold medals, 14 silver and 19 bronze.
