A look at the main sporting events this coming weekend
The European Boxing Championships are coming to a close this weekend in Kharkov, Ukraine. Eight Romanian boxers represented Romania in the competition, of whom six were eliminated in the first round and one in the round of 16. One Romanian managed to qualify to the quarterfinals: Mihai Nistor in the 91+-kg category. The bronze medalist of the previous two editions of the Championships, Nistor this time failed to secure a place in the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, Nistor lost on points to Victor Vihrist of Ukraine. Qualifying to the quarterfinals however will allow Nistor to compete directly in the World Boxing Championships, scheduled to take place in Hamburg over August 25 – September 3.
Romania’s rugby team on Saturday is playing a friendly game against Brazil. Being the first pitting the two teams against each other, the match will be hosted by Arcul de Triumf stadium in Bucharest. This month Romania lost 21-33 to Japan away from home, and defeated Canada 25-9 in Edmonton, as part of a series of friendly matches.
Although Brazil has had a rugby team ever since the 19th century, their national team doesn’t have too many achievements. The team plays in Americas Rugby Championship, where it managed to defeat the United States 24-23 in 2016, ranking fifth in the general standings. This year Brazil came in fourth in the championship, after the United States, Argentina’s B team and Uruguay. This year Brazil was trounced 51-3 by the United States, although they defeated Chile 17-3 and Canada, 24-23. (Translated by V. Palcu)
