Romanian men’s handball side Steaua Bucharest on Sunday qualified for the second preliminary round of the EHF Cup. The Romanians have secured a 29-25 win against Croatian side Varazdin in the second round of the first preliminary round. Steaua have also outperformed their opponents in the first round 26-25. Ionut Georgescu has scored most of the goals for the Romanian side, 11. Steaua will be next taking on Israeli side Maccabi Rishon LeZion. The first game is due on Steaua’s own ground on October 6th or 7th and the return game in Israel on October the 13th and 14th.
In women’s handball, Sport Club Municipal Craiova, holder of the EHF Cup trophy, have blown their chances to qualify for the Champions League. The Romanian side conceded a 22-21 defeat to Croatian challenger Podravka Koprivnika on Sunday in the finals of the competition’s preliminary Group B. Although the Romanians put on an excellent show almost all throughout the game, the final belonged to the Croatians, which have thus secured a place in the Champions League; the Romanians will be playing in the EHF Cup.
The World’s Rowing Championships kicked off in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv on Sunday. Marius–Vasile Cozmiuc and Ciprian Tudosa from Romania have qualified for the quarterfinals of the men’s pair. Romania’s Ionut Prundeanu and Marian-Florian Enache came only 5th in the double oar race and will carry on their fight for qualification. Having come in the second position in the race the Romanian men’s four have secured their qualification for the semis. The defending world’s champions Ionela-Livia Cozmiuc and Gianina-Elena Beleaga have qualified for the semifinals in Plovdiv after coming second in the lightweight women’s double scull race. The Romanian fours was not that lucky and ended the race on the fourth position, which means they will continue to compete for a place in the semifinals.
The selection of Fiji has won the World Rugby Trophy, a competition for under-twenty teams hosted by Bucharest. Fiji secured a 58-8 win against Samoa in the finals. After losing all the games they played against Namibia, Samoa, Hong Kong and Canada Romania came last in the standings, on the 8th position.
