The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, no.1 in the WTA rankings, lost the final of the Cincinnati tournament, with 2.9 million dollars in prize money. She was defeated by the Dutch Kiki Bertens, in a game that lasted more than two hours. Simona won the first set 6-2, but in the second one she lost the tiebreak and a match point. In the decisive set, Bertens managed to defeat Simona 6-2. Simona Halep will still get 262,000 dollars and 585 WTA points.
Also in Cincinnati, at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000, the pair made up of the Romanian Horia Tecau and the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer reached the semifinals but failed to qualify for the final round, as they were defeated by the British Jamie Murray and the Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-7, 6-2, 10-6.
We continue with news from football. The Romanian Alexandru Chipciu scored its first goal for Sparta Prague on Sunday, in the fifth leg of the Czech First League. The match against Pribram ended in a 2-2 draw. Four Romanian footballers played for Sparta: the goal keeper Florin Nita, Alexandru Chipciu, Nicolae Stanciu, and as of the 66th minute, Bogdan Vatajelu.
This weekend saw matches part of the Romanian First League in football. On Friday, Politehnica Iasi defeated FC Botosani 2-1, on home turf. On Saturday, in Giurgiu, Astra did not manage to outclass Dunarea Calarasi. The game ended in a draw, with only 9 of the host's players on the field. Denis Alibec was eliminated after receiving two yellow cards and the Congolese Dylan Bahamboula was eliminated for committing a foul. Also on Saturday, in Ovidiu, Viitorul won 2-nil against Gaz Metan Medias. Sunday saw the matches involving the teams that represent Romania in the ties for Europa League.
In Bucharest, FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, defeated Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe 2-nil, and in Cluj CFR won the match against Dinamo Bucharest 3-1. Monday is the day for the last two games of the leg with FC Hermannstadt pitted against FC Voluntari in Targu Mures, and Universitatea Craiova playing against Concordia Chiajna on the new field in Banie.
