Last week was a good one for Romanian tennis.
Last week was a good one for Romanian tennis. In Cluj, western Romania, our women players have outperformed the team of Canada in a Fed Cup game counting towards the first round of World Group ll. Saturday saw the first singles, when Sorana Cirstea defeated Carol Zhao in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Irina Begu clinched a three-set win against the Canadian player of Romanian extraction, Bianca Andreescu. Begu’s 6-2, 6-4 win against Katherine Sebov has sealed the fate of the competition, so the last singles game pitching Sorana Cirstea against Bianca Andreescu was canceled.
The Canadians won the doubles contest. Gabriela Dabrowski and Carol Zhao defeated Ana Bogdan and Raluca Olaru in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. The Romanian team has thus qualified for the World Group play-offs and will join the other victors of the World Group’s first round and also the teams that lost in the first round of the elite group. The play-off games are due on April 21st and 22nd.
Romanian tennis player Marius Copil last week secured the best result in his career, by qualifying for the finals of the ATP tournament in Sofia with 500,000 euros in prize money. Unfortunately Copil lost to Bosnian Mirza Basic in the competition’s last stage, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
And now let’s have a look at the results in women’s handball. On Saturday, in group D of the EHF Cup, Handball Club Zalau lost their away game to Swedish side Hoors 19-30, to rank second in the group. On Sunday in group A, Sport Club Municipal Craiova outperformed Danish side Randers in an away game, 29-25, and also landed the second position in the rankings. Both Craiova and Zalau have qualified for the competition’s quarterfinals. In the Champions League, CSM Bucharest drew 22-all their game against Russian side Rostov-Don. The Romanian side continues to head the first main group ranking, and has also qualified for the League’s quarterfinals.
And now football. Last weekend saw the matches of the 24th leg of Romania’s top football league.
