The cross-country racing Balkan Championships have been held in the Turkish city of Canakkale. The Romanian delegation walked away with gold medals won in the seniors’ events, in the individual as well as in the nations’ version of the competition. In the senior’s individual eight-kilometre race, Roxana Birca emerged as winner, clocking 30 minutes and 11 seconds. Cristina Simian came fourth, Paula Todoran was fifth-ranked, while Adela Baltoi was nineth placed in the event. Romania was placed at the top of the table in the nations’ competition, followed by Turkey and Serbia.
Romania’s national rugby team grabbed a 17-13 win in the game against Samoa, in a test-confrontation hosted by Romania’s capital city Bucharest. The Romanians managed to spectacularly turn the tables in their favour as at half time, Samoa had a 10-3 lead. Next week, the Romanian national rugby team will face the similar team of Tonga.
The Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzărnescu has won the ITF Japan’s Toyota tournament, an event with 60,000 USD up for grabs. In the final, Buzarnescu defeated Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek, 6-0, 6-1. 2017 is apparently Buzărnescu’s peak year as she lost only one game of the 15 matches played. Buzarnescu climbed up to the sixtieth position in the WTA rankings, having initially been 351st-placed.
Romania’s champion handball team CSM Bucharest on Sunday defeated Polish challengers Vistal Gdynia, 34-22. Hosted by Romania’s capital city, Bucharest, the game was CSM’s last fixture in Champions League’s Group A. CSM were the winners in their group with 10 points, out of five wins and one defeat of 5 games played, and earned the first place in the main group 1, with 6 points. Also part of main group 1 are Gyor, with 6 points, Rostov Don with 4 points, Nykøbing, also with 4, then Midtjylland and Krim Ljubljana, each with 2 points.
SCM Craiova has got through to the group stage of the EHF Cup in women’s handball, although they sustained a 26-24 defeat in the game against Hungarian contenders Debrecen. We recall that in the first leg SCM Craiova grabbed a 24-19 home win. SCM Craiova are the second Romania team to have qualified in the EHF Cup’s group stage. The first team was HC Zalau, who won the third preliminary round. In both legs of the tie against Austrian contenders Hypo Niederösterreich, Zalau won, 30-22 and 29-21, respectively.
Fixtures counting towards the 18th round of domestic League One were played at the weekend. In Timisoara on Friday, Poli were held by FC Botosani to a 1-all draw, while on home turf, Poli Iasi defeated FCSB, 1-nil. On Saturday in Brasov, the game pitting Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe against Gaz Metan Medias ended in a blank draw, while in Craiova, in the south, Universitatea defeated Juventus Bucharest, 3-1, in their first game hosted by Craiova’ s new stadium. On Sunday, Astra Giurgiu defected Concordia Chiajna 2-1 in Chiajna, while CFR Cluj grabbed a 2-1 away win against Dinamo Bucharest. CFR Cluj are at the top of the as-it-stands table, with 40 points, followed by FCSB, with 38, and Universitatea Craova, with 36 points on their record sheet.
