MARATHON- This weekend saw the 10th edition of the Bucharest International Marathon. Duncan Cheruiyot Koech of Kenya won the men’s race in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 13 seconds, a new race record. Almaz Gelana Erba of Ethiopia won the women’s race, while Romania’s Ana Veronica Rodean came in third. Emanuel Trandafir won the men’s semi-marathon, while Ancuta Bobocel won the women’s competition. Saturday saw the non-competitive, teenagers’ and children’s races, as well as the so-called “nappy race”, devoted to children aged 6 months to 4 years, accompanied by their parents.
TENNIS- The pair made up of Romanian Irina Begu and Sara Errani of Italy won Sunday’s women’s doubles at the WTA tournament in Tianjin, China, totaling 426 thousand dollars in prize money. Begu and Errani, who teamed up for the first time, won 6-4, 6-4 against third-seeds Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia and Nina Stojanovic of Serbia.
HANDBALL - This weekend saw a new round of European inter-club competitions. In the men’s Champions League, Dinamo Bucharest lost 24-28 to Ademar Leon of Spain and is bottom of the tables in Group C. In the EHF Cup’s second preliminary round, Dobrogea Sud Constanta defeated BSK Handball Elite. Both legs were played in Constanta. In Saturday’s first leg our team won 24-22 and clinched a 27-24 win in the second leg played on Sunday. Romania’s other representative, CSM Bucharest, was knocked out by SKA Minsk, losing 26-30 at home and 30-33 away from home. In the women’s EHF Cup, in the second preliminary round, HC Zalau defeated Ankara Yenimahalle of Turkey 26-21 on Saturday. Also on Saturday, CSM Roman lost away from home to Dunaujvaros of Hungary 24-31. Also on Sunday, Dunarea Braila lost 18-28 to Byassen Trondheim of Norway.
FOOTBALL-This weekend saw matches counting towards the 14th round of the Romanian First League. On Friday, FC Voluntari drew nil-all against FCSB. On Saturday, Viitorul Constanta won narrowly 1-nil against Gaz Metan Medias, while Universitatea Craiova won 2-1 against Poli Iasi. On Sunday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe drew nil-all against Astra Giurgiu, and CFR Cluj also drew nil-all against FC Botosani. The last two games will be played on Monday: Poli Timisoara will play Concordia Chiajna and Dinamo Bucharest will take on Juventus Bucharest. CFR Cluj tops the league tables with 33 points, followed by FCSB and CSU Craiova, both with 39 points.
