The latest from rugby, men’s handball and football
Romania’s national rugby team in Bucharest this past Saturday defeated the similar side of Spain, in a fixture counting towards the second round of the Rugby Europe Championship.
The Oaks had a hard time securing their 13-3 win, against the backdrop of a staunch resistance put up by the Spaniards. Romania’s scorer was Florin Vlaicu, who succeeded a try and successfully converted two penalty kicks.
In the round’s two other fixtures Russia managed a 25-18 away win against Belgium, while on home turf Georgia trounced Germany, 50-6. We recall Germany had previously succeeded the surprise of the competition, as in the first round they defeated Romania, 41-38.
Next it’s news from men’s handball, as Potaisssa Turda in the west has got through the Challenge Cup quarterfinals. This past Sunday in the second leg of the competition’s round of last 16, Potaissa sustained a 29-28 home defeat by Handball Esch of Luxembourg, yet they have made headway into the competition thanks to their 31-27 win in the first leg.
We recall that in their home game Potaissa had the upper hand and managed to maintain their 16-10 lead by the end of the first half. However, in the second half, Potaissa Turda relaxed and eventually conceded defeat, 28-29.
We go out with news from football, as this past weekend saw fixtures being played, counting towards the 24th round of the ongoing season. On Friday, CFR Cluj grabbed a 2-nil win against ASA Targu Mures, on home turf. On Saturday, FC Voluntari won the home game against Gaz Metan Medias, 1-nil, while Steaua Bucharest clinched a 2-1 win against CSU Craiova, in the southern Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu Severin.
On Sunday and also in Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Concordia Chiajna managed a 1-nil win against Pandurii Targu Jiu, while in Giurgiu, also in the south, defending champions Astra defeated the current leader Viitorul Constanta, 1-nil. Viitorul Constanta continue to be at the top of the table with 48 points, Steaua come second with 45 points, while 3rd-placed are Craiova, with 40.
