Handball
The Romanian men's handball side and defending champions Dinamo Bucharest are on the brink of a great achievement. They have the chance to qualify for the Champions League play-off stage if they finish on the first or second position in their group. Before that, Dinamo must win their final group match, which they will be playing on Thursday away against the Swiss side Wacker Thun. So far, the Swiss have lost eight of their nine matches in Group D and are bottom of the table in this group. They have only one point, which they won in a draw in a home match back in September against the Finnish side Riihimaen Cocks, the side currently occupying the last but one place in the group. Also in September, Dinamo Bucharest pulled off a narrow win against Wacker Thun, 35-34.
We move on to women's handball, with the European Championship set to kick off on Thursday in France. The host country and defending world champions France will face Olympic champions Russia in the opening match in Nancy, as part of Group B. Romania play in Group D, alongside world vice-champions Norway, the Czech Republic and Germany. The Group D matches will be held in Brest. Romania will face the Czech Republic on 1st December. Two days later, they will be playing against Germany and then, on the 5th December, Norway. The top three sides will make it to the next stage. In their last test ahead of the European Championship, the Romanian women's handball side won the Carpati Trophy last weekend in Bucharest. They defeated the second Romanian side in the final, 33-24. Previously, they also defeated Serbia 29-26. The second Romanian side had themselves defeated Russia 25-24. Russia ranked third in the Carpati Trophy competition after defeating Serbia 33-32.
