Cristina Neagu put in a solid performance in the match against Ferencvaros
Romanian handball champions CSM Bucharest had a good start in the 2018-2019 edition of Champions League. The team from Bucharest took on Ferencvaros of Budapest in the most difficult fixture in Group D. CSM won 36-31. The top scorer for the Romanian side was Cristina Neagu, which is why we have designated her Athlete of the Week on RRI.
Cristina Neagu was born in Bucharest on August 26, 1988. She started playing handball in a local sports club. As an under-21 player, she was designated best player in the world several times, starting 2005, when the Romanian women's national team won silver at the Under-21 European Handball Championship in Austria. In 2006 she started playing for Rulmentul Brasov, then she was signed by Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea. In 2010, she made it all the way to Champions League final with Oltchim. There followed a period when Cristina sustained multiple injuries, which kept her two years away from the field. After Oltchim was disbanded, Neagu was signed by Buducnost Podgorica of Montenegro, a team with which she won the Champions League trophy in 2015. Since 2017 she has been playing for CSM Bucharest.
Cristina Neagu was designated team captain for Romania in 2016. She won bronze at the European Championship in Denmark and Norway in 2010, and another bronze medal at the World Championships in Brazil in 2015. In 2010, 2015 and 2016 the International Handball Federation designated Neagu best player in the world, making her the first handballer in world history to be awarded this distinction three times.
