Handball player Eliza Buceschi
The Romanian women’s handball team is close to securing qualification to the European Championship scheduled for the end of the year in France. Romania is ranked first in preliminary Group 4 with 6 points, the same as Austria, although having a better goal average. Ranking 3rd is Russia with 4 points, while Portugal is last-placed with zero points.
The first two teams will qualify to the European Championship, along with the team with the best score out of the total of 7 teams that are ranked in 3rd position at the end of the group phase. Romania will next play Austria on May 31st away from home, then Portugal on June 3 at home.
On Sunday, Romania defeated the defending Olympic champions Russia, 26-25 at home, in Cluj (northwestern). The top scorer for Romania was Eliza Buceschi, which is why we have designated her Athlete of the Week on RRI.
Eliza Buceschi was born in August 1993 in Baia Mare, northern Romania. She is the daughter of coach Costica Buceschi, who trained her to reach top-level handball competitions. At 19 years of age Eliza was playing for Handbal Club Municipal Baia Mare. In the 2011-2012 season she became one of the top scorers in the Romanian championship. She scored 100 goals in the first half of regular season, until February 2012, when she sustained a right-arm injury, underwent surgery and was forced to miss out on the rest of the season.
Eliza was then loaned to Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea for a while. She also played for Germany’s Thuringer, as well as for Midtjylland, in Denmark. She returned to Romania in 2016 to play for Dunarea Braila. Later on she was signed in by Corona Brasov. In 2011 Eliza Buceschi was first called up to Romania’s national team. In 2015 she contributed to the team’s bronze medal at the World Handball Championships held in Demark.
